Understanding Pixel Resampling, Aspect Ratios, and File Size

Resizing an image alters its physical pixel matrix (resolution), unlike pure data compression which alters entropy encoding. Learn how each factor influences visual sharpness and final byte weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I keep my image from looking distorted or stretched?

Keep the aspect ratio lock button active (it is locked by default). When locked, any modification you make to width automatically updates height proportionally, and vice-versa, preserving the original proportions of your photo.

Will resizing an image reduce its file size?

Downsizing pixel dimensions (such as shrinking a 4000×3000 photo to 1200×900) will almost always significantly reduce the file size because there are fewer pixels to store. However, upscaling to larger dimensions or switching from JPEG to lossless PNG may increase file size. Resizing primarily manages pixel resolution.

Can I resize by percentage instead of exact pixels?

Yes! Switch to the Percentage tab to choose convenient presets such as 25%, 50%, 75%, 150%, or 200%, or type any custom percentage (e.g., 60%). The tool immediately displays the exact resulting pixel dimensions.

What happens to transparent backgrounds in PNG or WebP images?

If you export as PNG or WebP (or select "Same as input" for a transparent file), transparency is preserved. If you choose JPEG as your output format, transparent areas will be filled with a solid white background, since JPEG does not support transparency.

Can I upscale an image to larger dimensions?

Yes. You can enter larger pixel values or use presets like 150% or 200%. The tool employs high-quality bicubic smoothing to prevent harsh pixelation during scaling up to 15,000 pixels.

Are my images uploaded to any server or cloud service?

No. All resizing happens locally on your computer or smartphone using HTML5 Canvas. Your images never leave your device, ensuring maximum privacy and offline capability.
